Whatever's going on, whether it's your own drinking or drug use, or someone else's, there are people trained to help. Here's who to call.

A quick note before you scroll: every service listed here is confidential, and most helplines are free to call from a UK phone. You don't need to have the right words ready. You just need to reach out.

Talk to people on the same journey

Bee Sober Support Group (Facebook)

A private, judgement-free space to connect with people who are sober or thinking about it. Ask questions, share a win, or just see that you're not the only one going through this.

Free to join, and there whenever you need it

If you're worried about your own drinking or drug use

Alcoholics Anonymous (AA)

A fellowship of people who share their own experience to help each other stop drinking and stay stopped. Meetings run online and in person across the UK.

Helpline open every day, 10am–10pm

Drinkline

The national alcohol helpline, run by Alcohol Change UK. Free, confidential advice for anyone concerned about their own or someone else's drinking.

Weekdays 9am–8pm, weekends 11am–4pm

FRANK (National Drugs Helpline)

Confidential, judgement-free information and advice on drugs of any kind, for anyone who uses them or is worried about someone who does.

Helpline open 24 hours a day, every day

Narcotics Anonymous (NA)

A fellowship of people who share their own experience to help each other stay free from drugs of any kind. Meetings run online and in person across the UK.

Every day, 10am–midnight

If someone else's drinking or drug use is affecting you

Al-Anon Family Groups

Support and understanding for the families and friends of problem drinkers. You don't have to have "proof" or a diagnosis, just a life that's been touched by someone else's drinking.

Helpline open every day, 10am–10pm

Nacoa (National Association for Children of Alcoholics)

Free, confidential support for anyone affected by a parent's drinking, whatever their age now. Nacoa also supports professionals and anyone concerned about a child's welfare.

Monday–Saturday, 10am–7pm

Adfam

The UK's leading charity for families and friends affected by someone else's drug, alcohol, or gambling use.

Adfam doesn't run a phone helpline — email or their website is the best way to reach them

If you're in crisis right now

Samaritans

Confidential, non-judgemental emotional support, 24 hours a day, for anyone experiencing distress, despair, or thoughts of suicide. You don't have to be suicidal to call.

Hub of Hope

An anonymous UK-wide directory that helps you find the nearest mental health support for anything from anxiety to suicidal thoughts, including a button that connects you straight to the Samaritans.

Treatment and recovery services

Turning Point

A UK charity offering a wide range of health and wellbeing services, including tailored support for drug and alcohol issues, mental health, and learning disabilities.

Landmark Recovery

Full-spectrum drug and alcohol rehab and treatment services (US-based), with holistic treatment options and follow-up support for patients.

SMART Recovery UK

A free, science-based alternative to 12-step programmes, for any kind of addictive behaviour, not just alcohol. Meetings run online and in person.
